There is a long-standing history of cooperation between Suriname and Flemish higher education institutions. Since 2003, we have spent over EUR 8 million in cooperation programmes with Suriname, including 1 ongoing long-term Institutional University Cooperation (IUC) programme with Anton de Kom Universiteit (AdeKUS).

NOTE: Since 2018, the country programme Suriname is being phased out and no further project cooperation is started.

Country Strategy

The country strategy for Suriname identifies the following main themes for all future interventions in cooperation with Suriname:

  • Sustainable management of natural resources
  • Public health
  • Social development
  • Education

The country strategy identifies the following main transversal and cross-cutting themes:

  • The support of partner institutions in terms of policy (good governance), management (HRM & institutional capacity building) and internationalisation.
  • The support of the threefold task of the institution: education, research and service to society
