Platform Insecurity Uganda Phase I

Finished

About the Research Platforms

A Research Platform is a research network, focused on a well-defined theme with obvious and high impact at the country level. It requires the participation of experienced researchers from different universities and research institutes. A Platform is driven by a common research agenda and coordinates individual research projects (SI/ TEAM). The role of the Platform is to advise on the implementation of the Country Strategy and to support the individual SI and TEAM projects.

Research into Food, Health and Environmental Insecurity

The Insecurity platform aims at bringing together Ugandan and Flemish researchers who are interested in under-standing the relevance of the family in promoting food security, a healthy wellbeing and environmental sustainability in Uganda

Although the proportion of people living below the poverty line has significantly declined in the last decades, Uganda remains one of the poorest countries ranking 145 on the global Human Development Index. The situation is worse in Northern Uganda compared to other regions. A direct relationship has been demonstrated between poverty and health. Also central to one’s health is the significance of food and nutrition.   Uganda’s National Development plan recognises the need to encourage and promote nutrition through mass education and other appropriate means in order to build a healthy state. This platform among other objectives, seeks to understand how the family can promote its healthy wellbeing. Another thematic focus is ‘environment’. Although Uganda’s climate is conducive for production of a wide variety of crops, the country continues to experience problems of malnutrition, famine and hunger especially among vulnerable populations. The recent climatic changes coupled with an unstable global and national economy have exacerbated the situation among the population. This platform seeks to find ways in which the family can respond positively to these challenges and ensure environmental sustainability.
