Integrated groundwater potential evaluation for sustainable water supply of the city of Mekelle, Northern Ethiopia

Finished

Mekelle city, with projected population of over 315,000 in 2014, requires about 48,000 m3/d of water. However, at the moment only 25,000 to 28,000 m3/d is supplied from all wells around the city. Moreover, groundwater quality is under threat due to anthropogenic and other pollution sources. Hence, it is important that the groundwater potential of aquifers in the vicinity of Mekelle is evaluated in terms of quality and quantity and that the technical capacity of experts who search, develop and extract groundwater is enhanced which is the intention of this project.
