Sustainable and multi-user management of water resources in La Palca basin in the Andes of Bolivia

Finished

La Palca basin is located in the department of Potosí- Bolivia. The project will develop training programs and field training programs for teachers of the "Universidad Autónoma Tomás Frías" (UATF), on sustainable management and multi-use of water resources of variable or unknown quality, with practical application in the basin, in order to improve the investigative skills of teachers and establish strategic guidelines aimed to promoting sustainable development in the region and assist in the reduction of the poverty indicators. The long standing mining industry in the headwaters has a major impact on water quality in the region; therefore, mining activities (and other activities with potentially a similar impact) within and near the basin will be investigated in terms of water quantity and quality. Strategies of prevention and mitigation of pollution will be established. As a first step emphasis is put to data-collection and analysis as a basis for an integrated water management. This includes setting up a methodology for water quantity and quality assessments in view of further remediation actions.
