Improving the Synthetic Chemistry Expertise of the Cuban Academic Sector to Support the Development of ...

Ongoing

Cuba has a strong biotechnology sector with successful products for biomedical and agricultural applications. However, the development of small-molecule drugs and agrochemicals is by far below its potential, mainly due to the limited organic synthesis capability of the chemical sector. This project aims to reinforce the synthetic expertise and facilities of Cuban academic teams for supporting the introduction of new products and applications in the pharmaceutical and agricultural fields. With the aid of leading Flemish groups, this TEAM project focuses on training young Cuban scientific staff in modern methodologies and techniques employed for the production of bioactive compounds. Similarly, the technical assistance will be directed to implement efficient and environmentally friendly tools that facilitate both the drug development process and the effective scale-up and transfer to the industry. The targets will be lead compounds discovered in Cuba, such as antimicrobial and anticancer peptidomimetics, neuroprotective agents and natural products with antifungal and plant-growth promoting activity.
