This elective forms part of Hasselt University’s Global Minds Programme, which promotes critical reflection on development cooperation through a range of sensitisation events and a strong focus on the UN SDG. The emphasis lies on the global dimension, particularly the dynamics of globalisation and the Global South. The lectures are open to all students and interested participants.
This year’s edition critically examines the complex relationship between globalisation, inequality, and sustainability. While globalisation has driven profound social, economic, and environmental change, its benefits and burdens remain unevenly distributed. By focusing on the intersections of gender, class, and race, the course explores how global processes reproduce and reinforce systemic inequalities. Through theoretical frameworks and case studies, students will analyse how marginalised communities experience global economic structures, labour markets, environmental degradation, and migration.
Finally, the course considers how sustainable development, viewed through an intersectional lens, can promote social and environmental justice. Students are encouraged to critically assess sustainability initiatives — asking for whom and by whom development is pursued — and to imagine transformative approaches that prioritise equity at both local and global levels.
