Tranditional Leaders

Visit to Nelson Mandela University, South Africa

This week, we are visiting Nelson Mandela University (NMU) in South Africa. Indigenous Leaders are an essential part of the discussions, as we work together towards sustainable change for marginalised coastal communities.

In 2026, we are starting a long-term partnership with NMU through the SEALIFER project. This Institutional University Cooperation (IUC) focuses on the many forms of life in, on, and alongside South African waters. At the Cape, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet, a unique socio-cultural ecosystem of animal, plant, and human life has emerged. Yet this rich environment is increasingly challenged by a changing climate and persistent inequalities. Through this collaboration, we aim to support sustainable change in marginalised coastal communities, strengthen training and education, and enhance the uptake and impact of research.

During this week’s visit, colleagues Laura Uwase and Koen De Koster presented the next steps in preparing the fully-fledged proposals. The different sub-projects were introduced to one another, and Flemish and South African team members met to further shape their joint initiatives.
