Higher Education and Science for Sustainable Development (HES4SD)
The HES4SD initiative, led by ARES, VLIRUOS, and ITM, focuses on unlocking the potential of higher education and science to contribute to sustainable development. This strategic framework fosters collaboration across 60 Belgian higher education institutions (HEIs) and global partners, creating impactful multi-stakeholder partnerships.
A Joint Strategic Framework (JSF) is a coordinated approach that unites multiple actors to achieve common goals. In HES4SD, it brings together academic institutions, civil society, and other stakeholders to ensure that research and education contribute meaningfully to societal change and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Together with our partners, we also maintain a shared website, providing access to relevant information, updates, and opportunities within the HES4SD network.
HES4SD supports six strategic goals, from building individual capacities through scholarships and training, to enhancing the role of HEIs as change agents for sustainable development. By co-creating and applying knowledge, HES4SD strengthens the connection between science and society.
Through joint efforts and synergies between HEIs, the initiative emphasizes collective learning, research, and knowledge sharing for societal impact.
