About Mozambique

Mozambique is a priority country for Belgian and Flemish cooperation. Since 2003, we have spent over EUR 7 million in cooperation programmes with Mozambique, including one ongoing long-term Institutional University Cooperation (IUC) programme with Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM).

The IUC programme with UEM is the cornerstone of our country programme with Mozambique.

Country Strategy

Our country strategy for Mozambique complies with the Mozambican national strategy by giving priority to:

  • Agriculture (food chain management, food security)
  • Health (reproductive health, family medicine, community health, medical education)
  • Environment (natural resources management, climate change, renewable energy)

The country strategy identifies the following main transversal and cross-cutting themes:

  • Governance (social and human rights, gender, culture)
  • Education (language development, research-based education)
  • Community engagement
  • Information and Technology Services (ITS) and statistics

The main focus should be on institutions in central and northern provinces. Cooperation with institutions based in Maputo should be reduced to a supportive role.
