VLIR-UOS supports partnerships between universities and university colleges, in Flanders and in the South, looking for innovative responses to global and local challenges.
VLIR-UOS funds cooperation projects between professors, researchers and teachers. VLIR-UOS also awards scholarships to students and professionals in Flanders and the South. Lastly, VLIR-UOS helps to strengthen higher education in the South and the globalisation of higher education in Flanders.

Part of the Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR)
VLIR-UOS is an institution of public utility and was founded by the Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR), an overarching consultative organization between the Flemish universities and the Belgian government. In 1998 the VLIR gained responsibility for the federal funds for university development cooperation of the Flemish universities and founded VLIR-UOS as the VLIR-secretariat for university development cooperation.
VLIR-UOS receives funding from the Belgian Development Cooperation with a yearly budget of approximately 35 million Euros (in 2014). Read more about the structure of VLIR-UOS.
EFQM quality label
In February 2016 VLIR-UOS received the 'EFQM Committed to Excellence 1 Star' label. The EFQM Excellence model is one of the most widely used organisational frameworks in Europe. The label is an acknowledgement of VLIR-UOS' dedication to (improving) its organizational management quality and performance.
