Strengthening research and knowledge on the use of nickel waste slag in concrete to support sustainable development in Indonesia

Ongoing

The main goal of this initiative is to strengthen research and expand the knowledge on the use of nickel slag in concrete in Indonesia. By doing collaborative research and establishing a strong link between the Flemish and Indonesian institutes, the capability of the Indonesian researchers will improve. Knowledge will be transferred to the Bachelor students by implementing the research theme in courses and Bachelor projects. The initiative will furthermore involve from the start several stakeholders: the companies Aneka Tambang and Prima Karya Manunggal, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry Republic of Indonesia and Coastal communities around the mining site to support the sustainable infrastructure development in Indonesia. The project is essential as only a profound knowledge on the behaviour of concrete containing nickel slag will allow for a possible future transition in governmental policy for nickel slag to be used as supplementary cementitious material for concrete leading to a decrease of the slag in landfill and reducing the environmental pollution due to mining activities in South East Sulawesi.
