Prevention of HIV drug resistance in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: transdisciplinary problem analysis and research strengthening

Ongoing

This project proposal aims to contribute to the prevention of HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in a transdisciplinary patient-centred way. An HIVDR prevention intervention model will be designed in close collaboration with stakeholders and local people living with HIV. The model will consist of recommendations for necessary local interventions and a list of locally and nationally relevant research topics. Moreover, the existing Dar es Salaam Urban Cohort Study database containing local demographic and health information will be supplemented with HIV and HIVDR data. An agreement between MUHAS and the National Health Laboratory Quality Assurance and Training Centre (NHLQATC) will be set up enabling MUHAS to have their samples sequenced by the NHLQATC. MUHAS researchers of the Pharmaceutical Microbiology lab will be trained by the NHLQATC in the analysis and interpretation of the HIVDR testing results. Altogether, HIVDR research at MUHAS will be strengthened by providing research skills, tools and relevant topics.
